Started as assistant costume designer of Dagmar Schauberger at the RO-Theater / Rotterdam where he collaborated in productions directed by Franz Marijnen, Jerome Savary, Manfred Karge and Mathias Langhoff and Klaus Pohl.
Works since 1980 as independent costume designer for both large and small subsidised groups in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany with leading Dutch directors. Worked on more that 150 performances in theatre, ballet and opera. For Toneelgroep Amsterdam, directed by Gerardjan Rijnders: Hamlet /Shakespeare, Andromaque / Racine Penthesilea /von Kleist, Klaagliederen / Statenbijbel (Lamentations of Jeremiah), Richard III / Shakespeare, Zinsbegoocheling (Comic Illusion)/ Corneille en Dark Lady / the sonnets of Shakespeare.
For the National Theatre in The Hague he designed the costumes for amongst others Britannicus / Racine, dr.Bernardi / Schnitzler,de Kersentuin (The Cherry Garden)/ Tjechov, Het leven van Galileo Galilei (The Live of Galileo Galilei)/ Brecht, King Lear / Shakespeare, Strange Interlude / O´ Neil en Cyrano de Bergerac / Rostand. Phaedre/Racine and Oresteia/Aischylos. Medea / Euripides
For the Nationale Reisopera he designed the costumes for: Orpheus in de onderwereld (Orpheus in the Underworld)/ Offenbach, Rusalka/ Dvorzak, Don Carlo /Verdi, De Vliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman) /Wagner, Peter Grimes/ Britten, Fidelio/ Beethoven, La Traviata / Verdi, Der Prinz von Homburg (The Prins of Homburg) / Henze. I due Foscari/ Verdi and in co-operation with Opera The Munt/Brussels the opera Thyestes/van Vlijmen.
For the Muziektheater Transparant in Antwerp he designed the costumes for the opera Antigona / Tra’tta. For the Schiller Theater in Berlin the costumes for Schnitzlers Das Weite Land (The wide Land) and for the Deutsches Theater Berlin for Penthesilea by von Kleist.
In 2003 he designed the costumes for the movie Erik of ´t klein insectenboek (Erik or the small insect book)/ Bomans.
For the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam he designed the costumes for the opera Lucia di Lammermoor. For the Staatstheater Hannover, the costumes for the opera Carmen.
For the Staatsoper Mannheim, Ariadne auf Naxos/Straus.
In 2005 he became a solo exhibition about his work in The Rijksmuseum Twenthe, and get honoured by the Dutch Queen
In 2006 an exhibition in the Theatre Instituut Netherlands in Amsterdam.
He was Honorable designer from the Netherlands at the Quadrienale 2007 in Praha.
In September 2009 he presents his new work : scale costumes, based on the Shakespearean period, at the Lockmuseum Seoul, South Korea during the World Stage Design exhibition 2009.
Since 1999 Rien Bekkers teaches costume design at the Academy of Art in Maastricht at a part-time basis.
